As pleasant as Sapa town is, it's popularity makes getting away into the countryside that much better, in order to see a bit more of the real lives lived here where tourism has not changed things as much. That can be difficult, however, since challenging travel makes arranged tours to other markets and places most popular, with the resulting drawback of these tours bringing the tourist hordes to those places. My choice was to rent a motorbike and get lost in this hills. Then to hire a guide on another bike so I could actually get where I wanted to go. Hearing of places not visited, that is where I wanted to go, to participate in markets scheduled a certain day in the week to provide all regional tribal people a chance to come sell their wares and socialze with other tribal people. This was where less frequently seen tribes could be found. I was actively discouraged from attempting some journeys, especially on motorbike, because of long, poor jeep trail conditions, and the fact that tourists don't go there, especially by motorbike. So of course these were positive highlights of the journey, where astonished locals were so surprised to see a foreigner on a bike, some extremely wary of this alien, but many as friendly as could be to meet this intrepid and stupid traveler. Along the way beautiful valleys, dramatic peaks and local culture unfolded before our eyes. And my guide, who had never biked there himself, always prior having taken the few tourists going by jeep, was as pleased with this most fun open air experience outside the bumpy jeep as was I.
photographie-irie > Sapa Mountain Mist, Sapa Town, Vietnam

Looking across, up and over an expanding Sapa town toward the misty mountains that surround it, you often sees weather changing before your eyes. Rain and then sunshine breaks, and then mist filling in or fading away. Popular pastimes beyond shopping and eating are guided treks through ethnic villages and arranged tours to smaller more regional markets within the district, where further varieties of ethnic minorities can be seen and engaged. Home stays are also available.
photographie-irie > Looking Down on Sapa Town from Sapa Town Sapa, Sapa, Vietnam

Sapa town is built on a mountainside in Sapa district in Lao Cai Province, which borders China in northwest Vietnam. The mountain climate is cool and misty, with only one rice crop possible per year on the terraced hillsides and bottomlands. The mountains are rugged and steep, with Vietnam's tallest peak, Fansipan (3,143 meters), within view from town on a clear day, marking the southeast terminus of the Himalaya Range. The town itself is terraced up the hillside, providing a picturesque setting for this quaint but discovered destination. It is popular among Vietnamese as well as foreigners, which calls for a bit of regional travel to beat the expanding and ever more upscale tourist scene. That being said, travel can be difficult with bad roads and limited or no facilities distant from town. Many areas closer to the border are closed to tourists without special permits, which tend now to be available for having made the application and being prepared to hire the necessary local guide for such infrequent trips.
