photographie-irie > Pig Roast, Lovina, Bali, Indonesia      Having the good fortune to befriend a most gracious Balinese local, we were invited to celebrate a religious holiday at his home and with his family. The friendly and relaxed day revolved around the pig roast, turned into Bali's delicious specialty dish of Babi Guling.
photographie-irie > Food Vendor 2, Nha Trang, Vietnam      The ubiquitous bamboo cone hat and burning cigarette, often dangling, could be trademarks of Vietnamese womanhood for how often they appear. The hats are extremely practical for shade and cooling space for air to flow around ones head. They are very Vietnamese, as a trip across the river into Laos finds hardly any evidence of their use, and in Cambodia I even encountered local resentment when they were present, as symptomatic of concerns about Vietnamese cultural and actual immigrant invasion. Throughout Southeast Asia I found the cultures in various countries to be collectively similar in their differences from Western cultures of which I familiar, and yet exceedingly distinct in their own unique cultures and character. This shouldn't be a surprise, as crossing borders in Europe introduces similar discovery over a similar geographic area. It does typify one application of the exceedingly popular common local saying, "same same, but different", which once coined, seems apt use in most any situation. Unfortunately it's very popular on t-shirts as well.

Nha Trang is a beach town increasingly popular with tourists and targeted for significant further development. As a result it has it's touristy aspects and penalties of such rapid development. Some efforts at fullfilliing perceived visitor needs result in curious and comical effects, reflective of huge cultural differences. They are trying hard but sometimes just don't get it. The popularity of the resort also has attracted an element of "taxi girl" crimes and multiple claims of bar "mickeys" among other travelers I encountered. The common themes were already inebriated individuals having their unguarded drinks tampered with in bars, or being rollled by gangs of hookers on their way home, with "boyfriends" on motorcycles being handy for quick escape. I had no personal experience even close to what I heard from friends, having spent most of my time away from the touristy areas. In doing so I encountered some of the friendlest locals and most entertaining situations I had on my journey, yet the touristy atmosphere and beaches less clean than elsewhere in the country made Nha Trang our least favorite place. Still interesting and very much fun, but not at the top of the list. Islands off the coast are supposed to offer some of the better diving in Vietnam.
