photographie-irie > Tarsius Monkey, Tangkoko National Park, Northeast Sulawese, Indonesia

Tarsius Monkeys are the world's smallest measuring only five inches in length, and are nocturnal in behavior. So it's a good idea to let a guide help you find these diminutive creatures inside the hollows of trees where they hide and hang when they aren't jumping around your heads, flitting from tree to tree. Tangkoko is not easy to reach, but has a good sampling of biological diversity for which the entire Sulawese area is rightfully famous.

It's hard to say goodbye to Bali and all the wonderful people (and animals) we met. The little island is such a unique, exotic and relaxing place to adventure, I shall certainly return.

If you prefer your bats other than barbequed, or should freshness be an overriding issuee, these live bats can fill the bill for dinner tonight. Cook and prepare however you wish. Add peppers.

Yes there they are, the dog you didn't know you ate last night. When taken to a local eatery by a nice local we had met, he and his friends assured us we would eat no Fido. However, when my travel partner went to use the rest room, the only other traveller there inquired whether she liked the dog. When she said she didn't think we had tried dog, he told her that if she tried each of the multiple dishes we were served, then she had eaten dog.... and bat and snake and.... So we had eaten dog.... Funny joke for our hosts... The thing about their food is that it is so hot with peppers it's very hard to tell what you are eating as you continually grab for that beer.

Among the somewhat unconventional sources of protein in the Minahasan diet on Sulawesi are these bats. You may also notice what appears to be the butt of a dog (or two and a half).

The Christian Minahasans occupy northern Sulawesi and have very interesting dietary habits that can often be somewhat upsetting for the uninitiated.

Also seen during our night time trek into the jungle to find Tarsius Monkeys among all the other outstanding wildlife in the park, including black apes, maleo birds, hornbills, snakes, wild pigs, and rusa deer.
photographie-irie > Siladen Island, Bunaken Marine Park, Sulawesi, Indonesia

Beach huts are cheap, all the water is hauled to the island, life and food is simple, and the relaxing is great.

Part of the Marine Park widely considered another one of the top ten dive sites in the world, Siladen Island is a bit off the Bunaken Island beaten path, and totally relaxing. Very modest facilities. Bring books and batteries for your reading light.
